Performing Arts for Youth Organization (PAYO)

Now entering its 37th season, Performing Arts for Youth Organization provides arts-in-education experiences to youth of the Pikes Peak region. PAYO's roster of performers includes singers, storytellers, poets, dancers, musicians and actors. PAYO serves as a conduit, enabling schools to locate top-notch performers and, in-turn, helping those performers find work opportunities.

Programs include African drumming, a tribute to Dr. Seuss, Native American music and storytelling, an exploration of percussion and several acts that highlight local history. The more than 50 different performances are designed for various age groups, from preschool through high school.

All PAYO programs meet national education standards, and the organization is working toward matching all its shows to the Colorado Model Content Standards for K-12 academics. Further, PAYO works closely with its roster of artists to ensure that programs are kid-friendly and accessible without compromising the artistry. That role is particularly helpful for schools, which usually lack the time or the connections to a wide range of talented educational performers.

PAYO was formed in 1969 by several women – including Bee Vradenburg – who were concerned about arts programs disappearing from schools. The organization is sustained by donations from individuals, corporations and foundations and the small fees charged for performances.
